UNIONDALE, NY — PSEG Long Island is giving money toward a Merrick-based not-for-profit.

Balloon Mission, an organization that collects discarded balloons to protect wildlife and the environment, received $1,000 from PSEG Long Island.

PSEG Long Island reminds the public that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. Metallic balloons conduct electricity and resting on an electric line or other electrical equipment could lead to power outages, fire, and, possibly, injuries.

Cynthia Seibold, the Balloon Mission founder and executive director said they are expanding programs this year as area schools and libraries with host balloon collections to keep them out of the environment.

"We also partner with balloon retailers and designers who host recycling bins and encourage people to celebrate with responsible balloon practices," she said.

"We are supporting this wonderful organization that is raising awareness about the potential dangers balloons can have on our environment," said Anna Keselman, co-president of the PSEG Long Island GREEN EBRG. "We are inspired by Cynthia’s enthusiasm and her organization’s mission to protect turtles, sea life and our lands."

Seibold said Balloon Mission will also hold demonstrations, beach cleanups, festivals and activities, especially around Earth Day.
