State Police Offers Holiday Shopping Safety Tips

The New York State Police are providing personal safety tips to help you avoid becoming a victim this holiday shopping season.

Two of the biggest holiday shopping days of the year are Black Friday (Nov. 23) and Cyber Monday (Nov. 26). 

While you shop for bargains in a crowded mall or online in the comfort of your own home, burglars, thieves, and other criminals will be looking for their chances to benefit, as well.

The following tips are to ensure safety throughout the holiday season:

• Stay focused and cognizant of your surroundings. Beware of approaching strangers, cautious of large crowds, and shop during the day, if possible.
• Deter pickpockets and purse-snatchers. Carry your purse close to your body, or your wallet inside a coat or front trouser pocket. Beware of “teams” who try to distract you in order to steal from you.
• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Use debit cards, credit cards, gift cards or a check to pay for purchases.
• Wait until asked before taking out your credit card or checkbook. An enterprising thief may be looking over your shoulder to get your account information. Never let your credit card out of your sight.
• If you see something, say something. Tell a security guard or store employee if you see an unattended bag or package. The same applies if you are using mass transit.
• Do not buy more than you can carry. Plan ahead by taking a friend with you or ask a store employee to help you carry your packages to the car.
• If you are shopping with children, make a plan in case you get separated. Select a central meeting place and make sure they know they can ask mall personnel or store security employees if they need help.
• Have your keys in hand when approaching your vehicle. Check the back seat and around the car before getting in.
• Do not leave packages visible in your car windows. Lock them in the trunk or, if possible, take them directly home.
• Shop online with companies you know and trust. Check a company’s background if you are not familiar with it. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
• Consider alternate options to pay for your merchandise at online stores and auction sites, such as credit cards, gift cards, money orders, or online financial services, which may offer limited buyer protection.
• Save all receipts. Print and save all confirmations from your online purchases. Start a file folder to keep all receipts together and to help you verify credit card or bank statements as they come in. This will help in case you find any unauthorized charges on your bank accounts or credit cards.
