Stolen Neighborhood Watch Sign Replaced

Editor's Note: This article was written by Claudia Borecky.

The first Neighborhood Watch sign that the North and Central Merrick Civic Association ("NCMCA") procured at the corner of William Street and Chapin Avenue had been removed and/or stolen.

We called the Town and are pleased to report that the sign has now been replaced. This sign helps prevent criminal activity in our community. We are the eyes and ears of our community and through our email blasts to 1,700 Neighborhood Watch participants, have the ability to alert neighbors of criminal activity.

At our Feb. 21 meeting, Sgt. O'Mara from the 1st Precinct reported that it has been relatively quiet in our community.

He reported that:

  • There were no burglaries
  • Car rims were stolen on Park Avenue
  • Pit bull attacked a pomeranian on Somner Avenue
  • Drug deal on Merrick Avenue at the Southern State Parkway

Sgt. O'Mara further stated that they have not received word of when the 1st Precinct will merge with the 7th Precinct, but does not expect the move to happen until spring.
