Here are the top stories in Merrick today:
- We now know the name of the man who was struck by the train traveling westbound east of the Bethpage station. He is Kevin Phuc Pham, 22, and he has died as a result of his injuries. The incident happened just after 4:30 P.M. Thursday afternoon. (Daily Voice)
- The Nassau County police department has announced that a 67-year-old man has died after falling into the water behind his home in Island Park on Thursday. The man, whose name has not been released yet, left his home shortly after 6 P.M. and fell into the inlet behind his property. The man was found by a neighbor and pulled to a dock before police could arrive. (Daily Voice)
- Nassau County’s summer recreation program, offering a safe, affordable and fun summer day camp experience for kids from 5 to 12, is now open for registration. The summer season for campers will be from June 27 to August 4 from 8:30 A.M. TO 4:00 P.M. in three parks: Cantiague Park in Hicksville, Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach and Wantagh Park. (LongIsland.com)
- Jay Jacobs, state and county Democratic chairman, is under fire today from local Democrats. He raised concern by intervening in the primary to replace Democrat Rep. Kathleen Rice from Garden City in New York’s Fourth Congressional District. He also stands accused of insensitivity by local women's groups for his response to a request for help from Hempstead Supervisor Laura Gillen and angering students and residents in his response to renaming a street currently named after a one-time Ku Klux Klan leader. - Take it from me: there’s not much moms like better than not having to do that fast kitchen shuffle to get a meal on the table and the slower slog to get it all cleaned up afterward. Take the poor woman to brunch for heaven’s sake. Check out the list of places currently taking reservations and give them a call early on to make sure you get a table. (Patch)

- Have brunch with your favorite superhero (costumes encouraged for the photo sessions afterward) at Gatsby on the Ocean, 2000 Ocean Parkway, in Wantagh. The cost is $49.95 for adults and $22.95 per child, with advance reservations required. (11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M.)
- A musical production of the classic tale of Cinderella is being presented at the Bellmore Movies and Showplace, 22 Pettit Avenue in Bellmore. The musical is being produced by Plaza Theatricals. Tickets are $15 for all ages. (12:00 P.M.)
- Listen to the sounds of Shilelagh Law, New York’s Thirstiest Irish Band at Sonny’s Canal House, 1 Jefferson Place in Baldwin. This group reinterprets traditional Irish music through the gritty filter of urban experience. They see themselves as a little neighborhood band making big waves wherever they go, but their 18 years of success suggest otherwise. (4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.)
From my notebook:
- No matter where you live on Long Island, there is a garden club near you. This list of several clubs has their meeting schedule (mostly once a month) and how to find them. Besides meeting like-minded people, garden clubs usually offer discussions, lectures, tours, trips and seed exchanges. (Plant Something)
- Even if you don’t have time to run to the library this week, you can still hear more about your favorite authors. The Merrick Library's Carol Ann Tack talks to authors in her Top Shelf Podcast. This week’s interview is with Anne Hartnett, author of "Unlikely Animals." (Top Shelf)
