The Calhoun On Tour Company presents The Winter’s Tale

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, The Calhoun High School On Tour Company is kicking off its season with William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. Performances will be held on October 25th, 26th and 31st (understudy performance), as well as November 1st and 2nd in Calhoun High School’s auditorium, located at 1786 State St, Merrick, NY 11566. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of the understudy performance which will take place at 4:00 p.m. Directed by Salvatore Salerno, tickets to The Winter’s Tale can be purchased by phone at (516) 992-1377.

Characterized as a romance, The Winter’s Tale combines both tragic and comic elements. The first half of the play is centered on the jealously paranoid Leontes, King of Sicilia, his wife Queen Hermione, and his childhood friend Polixenes, King of Bohemia. Directly opposing it, the second half focuses on the festive comedy of Florizell, son of Polixenes, and his love interest Perdita. This riveting play features some of Shakespeare’s most mind-blowing poetry, includes his most famous stage direction, “exit pursued by bear,” and depicts the enthralling power of redemption. Like most On Tour Company Shakespeare productions, a spin is taken on the time and setting. In this case the style of the production is that of a medieval storybook.

The talented cast includes Daniel Maldonado as King Leontes, Rebecca Peretz as Queen Hermione, Samantha Kamelhar as Paulina, Jonathan Leiner as King Polixenes, Will Rosenblum as Prince Florizell, Jamie Glickman as Perdita, Robert Gallo as Camillo, Adam Wilkes as Antigonus, Stephen Ponticello as Autolycus, Sean Heverin as the Shepherd, and Zach Abrams as the Shepherd’s son.

The On Tour Company will be holding its annual Dinner Theatre, on November 2nd at 5:30pm. This year, the dinner theatre takes on a medieval theme to fit that of the play. A choir will perform authentic Madrigal pieces and parents and friends can enjoy a traditional medieval banquet.

Tickets for The Winter’s Tale are $8 for students and seniors, and $10 for adults and can be purchased at the door. Tickets for Dinner Theatre are $30 for students/seniors, and $35 for adults. You can reach the box office at (516) 992-1377 to reserve tickets for any of the events.

This year’s season consists of William Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, Harold Rome’s Pins and Needles, Monty Python’s Spamalot, and Moises Kaufman’s The Laramie Project.

Mr. James Drake and Dr. Dale Parkinson founded the On Tour Company in 1973.  Subsequent instructors included Mrs. Dianne Meistrell and Mr. John Fredrickson among several others.  The program, under the direction of Mr. Sal Salerno, has been performing since September 1985, and is now one of the finest school drama programs on Long Island and in NY State.
