Traffic Stop In Nassau Leads To Weapon Arrest: Police

Police say they pulled over the car and smelled of marijuana. And it turned out the driver had a loaded gun on him, police said.

Two Hempstead men were arrested in Uniondale after a traffic stop found a gun in their car, police said.

According to police, officers pulled over a 2003 Nissan Altima at Nassau Road just after 11:45 p.m. on March 16. While walking up to the car, police say that the officer smelled marijuana coming from the car. Police say that the driver, Michael Whitmore, 24, of Elk Street, Hempstead, was exiting the car and became uncooperative, and had to be restrained by officers after he reached into his pocket.

Police say they found a loaded revolver on Whitmore, and then arrested him and his passenger, Shaquille Little, 24, of Willow Avenue, Hempstead.

Whitmore is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana and several vehicle and traffic law violations. Little is charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana. Both were arraigned on Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead.
