- Local gas prices have skyrocketed to a record high in the wake of the war in Ukraine and President Biden's proposed ban on Russian oil imports, according to AAA. Across Long Island, the average price at the pump was up nine cents to an all-time high of $4.35 yesterday. Luckily for Merrick residents, the cheapest gas on Long Island is just a short drive to Seaford, where prices were as low as $4.09 at the Citgo on 3818 Sunrise Highway. (Patch)
- A suspect is currently on the run after shooting a man at Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream, about 20 minutes from Merrick. During the Monday afternoon attack, an unknown person entered Famous Footwear and allegedly confronted another man in the store. The suspect reportedly pulled out a handgun, fired one round, and struck the victim in the leg. Police say the shooter fled the store with a second man in an unknown direction, while the victim was transported to a local hospital. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. (Daily Voice)
