Here are the top five stories in Merrick today:

  1. Authorities charged two teens with murder after police found a man dead on a Uniondale roadway. Kyle Colthirst, of Uniondale, and Tariq Pitaud, of West Babylon, both age 18, face charges of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery and more, for crimes they allegedly committed on January 10. The victim has been identified as Kyle Midtlyng, age 24, of Hempstead. (Rutherford Daily Voice)
  2. Officials say fire broke out at a Mineola building for the second night in a row. The flames began around 6:00 PM on both Friday and Saturday last week. The fires have destroyed two businesses and displaced at least a dozen people. (News 12 Bronx)
  3. Learn about the success of the Peer Diversion Court at the LI Herald. The program began around ten years ago Hempstead High School as an alternative to suspension.
