Vikings Sink Lady Colts Lacrosse

North Shore scored early and often as they defeated Calhoun yesterday, 17-4.

Sometimes you just have to give credit to your opponent on a well-played game.

The Lady Colts traveled to North Shore to take on the Lady Vikings yesterday afternoon on what was a cold and breezy day.  However, the weather was the least of Calhoun's worries as they had difficulty stopping North Shore's fast-paced offense.  The Lady Vikings scored early and often and rolled to a 17-4 win.

Lauren Janelli had five goals, Kathleen Lennon scored four, and Tess Korten and Sam Grahber chipped in three each for North Shore, while Ava Fitzgerald scored two of Calhoun's four goals.

The loss was not due to a lack of effort, and the Colts were quick to acknowledge the tremendous effort put forth by North Shore.

"Sometimes you just have to take into consideration that their goalies are good or that they have really good players," Christina Vitale said. "Our team is strong, but we just didn't have a good day."

Lennon and Kathleen Goettelmann scored the first two goals for North Shore, and Megan O'Sullivan scored for Calhoun to make it 2-1.  After another goal by Lennon, Fitzergald added another for Calhoun to put the deficit back to one.

That's when things went downhill for the Colts as North Shore proceeded to score the next nine goals in the game. Lennon added two more, Korten scored three, Janelli scored two and Grabher scored two during the span.

"We did well sliding to the ball," Lennon said. "We had a lot of good feeds inside, we finished well and we shot well.  It was an all around good performance."

Fitzgerald finally snapped the streak by scoring her second goal of the game to make it 12-2.

North Shore scored five more goals before Calhoun scored their last goal off the stick of Erin Green. The final goal of the game was scored by North Shore's Laura Wefer.

"We played really good defense," North Shore coach Sarah Hogan said. "And that was definitely our strong suit in this game.  We were able to hold them to four goals, and that was really positive for us. On attack we had really nice passing and a lot of really good assists."

In goal, Casey Solotoff made ten saves for Calhoun.  On the other side, the duo of Kristen Giovanniello and Jennie Berglon combined to make 13 saves. It was an impressive performance by the goalies, and the Colts were quick to praise.

"We came in with a good attitude," Michaela Buckley said. "We definitely could have done better, but we tried.  We took a lot of shots but their goalies were just really good."

The loss dropped Calhoun to 0-5 in conference play, while North Shore moved to 3-1.

The Lady Colts will look to rebound when they take the field against Garden City at home next Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
