Race Raised Funds for Kidney Disease Research

Hempstead, N.Y.– The Village of Hempstead hosted its annual Tyree Curry 5K Memorial Run/Walk Health Fair and Hempstead Community Day on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The Village hosts this event every year as part of Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr.’s ongoing commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles. The Tyree Curry 5K also included a health fair and Hempstead Community Day. Community day events included a free concert, health screenings, food, face painting, fitness classes, balloon artists, a bouncy house and family-friendly games.

“The Tyree Curry 5K Memorial Run/Walk and Health Fair is one of the most important events of the year,” said Mayor Wayne J. Hall Sr. “There are new reports every day about the dangers of an unhealthy lifestyle. The Tyree Curry 5K Memorial Run/Walk yHealth Fair and Hempstead Community Day is a great way for the community to support this worthy cause and accept the challenge of leading a healthy lifestyle.”

Tyree Curry was a beloved a school administrator who served in the school system for 32 years. He was also a photographer, musician and disc jockey. He helped to improve education for several generations of Hempstead's youth, as he fought to make things better for African-Americans and all others in the community. Mayor Wayne Hall has renamed the annual 5K races in his honor. Proceeds from this year’s Tyree Curry 5K were donated to NephCure Kidney International (NKI) – www.nephcure.org. NephCure is the only organization in the world that focuses on raising money for research to find better treatments and a cure for some of the most devastating kidney diseases affecting children and adults: Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) and Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). Hempstead and surrounding neighborhood residents are encouraged to help in any way they can, whether by donating directly to NephCure, participating in the race, or sponsoring a runner.
