In case you missed it, here's what went down in your town last week:
On Sunday, we kicked off the week with news of an easy win for the Kennedy softball team, which rolled over Great Neck South, 14-1. The North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League held a parade to signal the start of a new season.
On Monday, the big news was the visit of Sharon Robinson, the daughter of baseball great Jackie Robinson, to Birch School, where she honored fourth-grader Alena Korins, who won the Breaking Barriers Essay Contest. North Merrick residents went to the polls to elect a new trustee to the library board, with Barbara Behrens claiming victory over Matt Kuschner. Dr. Lynne Thies, a psychologist at Camp Avenue School won the 2010 Presidential Award from the National Association of School Psychologists. A short-handed Calhoun volleyball squad lost to Hicksville.

On Tuesday, we had a preview of the fifth annual Robbie's Run, which was held today at Lakeside School. Residents attended an adolescent suicide awareness and prevention program at Brookside School. The Merrick Cook, Laura La Vacca, offered up a re-creation of Guy Anthony's pizza. In sports action, Colts baseball stunned Massapequa, Cougars baseball fought back before losing to Baldwin and the Kennedy volleyball team kept its perfect season intact with a win over Lawrence.
On Wednesday, there was disturbing news out of Bellmore, where police said a man exposed himself to a Mepham High School student. South Merrick Civic President Joe Baker wrote a column arguing that nothing good would come to Merrick if a waste-to-energy plant were built in Freeport. We also had your Merrick Crime Report, which included several vehicle break-ins. On the athletic fields, Calhoun softball crushed Freeport, Robbie Stalzer pitched a complete game shutout for the Cougars and the Kennedy softball team won its sixth straight game with a victory over Port Washington.

On Thursday, the news out of the Merrick School District was the adoption of a $41 million 2010/11 school budget, which will be sent to the voters next month. Calhoun's "Voices of the Past" class welcomed Ruth Minsky Sender, a Holocaust survivor and best-selling author, to the school. The central high school district hosted a workshop on financial and legal planning for parents of special needs children. On the volleyball court, Calhoun lost to Roslyn and Kennedy won against Hewlett.
On Friday, we had news of the arrest of an East Meadow man, who police said was the man who exposed himself to the Mepham High student. A Merrick band, Eric and the Sliders, is headed to the Meadowlands to play in the Bamboozle Music Festival. In a battle of crosstown rivals, Calhoun toughed out a win over Kennedy on the baseball diamond.
On Saturday, we had videos of all 20 performances from Kennedy High's "Unplugged" acoustic night, which raises money for scholarships for music students. We also checked in on Calhoun's fourth annual fashion show, which is put on by the school's Senior Experience class, with proceeds going to help children in Uganda.
