Let's cut to the chase today as we know that as much as you love reading Patch, it's really hot out, and you'd much rather be in the pool. So here's the recap of everything newsworthy that happened in Merrick last week:
On Sunday, we had news that Write Impressions Ltd., a Merrick stationary and gift store, was closing down for good. Patch editor Ryan Bonner offered a commentary on his all-too-real day of reporting on the Meadowbrook Parkway tragedy.
On Monday, reporter Drew Moss visited with Peter Holmstedt–owner of the Holm's Citgo station on Merrick Avenue–who has been donating a penny for each gallon of gas sold to charitable causes.

On Wednesday, the big news came from a softball field in Dix Hills, where Merrick's 12-year-old Williamsport team defeated North Shore to capture the Long Island championship. Reporter Carol Hoenig had report on a Beach Bag Book Club gathering at the Merrick Library.
The Merrick Cook, Laura La Vacca, told you how to re-create Starbucks iced coffees at home. We also had your weekly Merrick Crime Report, which included the disturbing news of a teen attacked by six males in Merrick.
On Thursday, we gave you the scoop on a meeting of the North Merrick Library's Board of Trustees, who welcomed a new member to the board and then discussed several upcoming renovation products. Sticking with the library theme, we also sat in on the Merrick Library's board meeting, where Susan Dillon and Laura Cody were re-elected as president and vice president, respectively.
In sports news, reporter Rick Karas spoke with Steve Abgarian, a former Kennedy High soccer star, who was recently named athlete of the year at SUNY-Brockport.
On Friday, we had news from the Merrick Burger King, where an employee was busted for selling crack cocaine in the parking lot while at work. In much happier news, we had full coverage of Yankees center fielder Brett Gardner's visit to Coleman Country Day Camp. In a new feature on Patch, we also provided listings of open jobs right here in Merrick.
On Saturday, there was more troubling news on the crime front, as a 52-year-old Merrick man was arrested in Massapequa Park for exposing himself to a woman and her two children. In arts news, reporter Christopher Collora filed a report from the Long Island International Film Expo, where Calhoun High grad Jill Schissel took home several awards.
