Merokeans head to the polls, Kennedy volleyball teams on fire, four arrested on weapons charges...

It was another busy week in Merrick, from Election Day to several high school sports teams in playoff action. The weather is getting chilly in town, but the news shows no signs off cooling down.

In case you missed any Merrick news last week, here is the full rundown of everything we covered here at Patch: 

On Sunday, we had a packed photo gallery from the North Merrick Community Association's annual Spooktacular held at Fraser Park. In sports news, the Calhoun football team rallied for four touchdowns, but couldn't knock off Wantagh. The Bellmore-Merrick girls swim team won the Division C championship.

On Monday, we had a comprehensive voter's guide so you could brush up on everyone who was running for office. The county legislature approved a $2.6 billion budget, which included the repeal of the county guarantee and a sewer tax for non-profits. In an instant classic, the Kennedy boys soccer team beat Calhoun 2-1 in double overtime in the playoffs. The Lady Cougars volleyball team headed into the playoffs on a winning note with a sweep of Roslyn.

On Tuesday, we had a video report on Nassau County graduating 30 new auxiliary police officers.  The Cougars volleyball team came back from a 2-1 set deficit to win in five sets against Lawrence in the county quarterfinals. The Kennedy football squad was shut out by Garden City in its last game of the season. George Capra, in his "Merrick Memories" column recalled a 'beautiful and spooky' castle in the middle of town.

Tuesday was also Election Day and Patch had full coverage of everything going on at the ballot boxes. Turnout around Merrick was higher than usual, according to local poll workers. The victors of local races were: Carolyn McCarthy, Earlene Hooper, Peter King, Dave McDonough, Tom McKevitt and Charles Fuschillo. We also had the scoop on the statewide races.

On Wednesday, the Kennedy girls soccer team battled evenly with undefeated Massapequa, but lost in the county quarterfinals on a late goal. Elizabeth Rosado, a 2002 Kennedy grad, was part of a law school team that won a national trial advocacy competition. Syracuse University Professor of Inclusive Education Dr. Mara Sapon-Shevin spoke before about 400 parents at Birch School about diversity education. 

On Thursday, veterans from our armed forces paid a visit to Birch as part of the school's third annual Veterans Celebration. Four people were arrested on weapon possession charges following a traffic stop in Merrick. We also had your weekly Merrick Crime Report. In sports action, Kennedy boys soccer lost to Great Neck in the county quarterfinals, while the Lady Colts of Calhoun fell to Farmingdale in the quarters.

On Friday, the Lady Cougars put on display of crisp volleyball in a sweep of West Hempstead in the Class A quarterfinals. We told you about the start of a new season for the Bellmore-Merrick Basketball League. We had news of a garage fire in North Merrick. In a letter to the editor, Claudia Borecky thanked everyone who helped make the NMCA's Spooktacular a success. We also had the rundown of open houses in Merrick this weekend.

On Saturday, the Kennedy boys volleyball team routed Bethpage to punch its ticket to the county finals. Kennedy honored its October students of the month. We also told you where you can find a job right here in Merrick.
