Weekly Recap: Fatal Crash, Car Flips, Teacher Honored

Busy week? No worries. Patch highlighted the top stories of the week so you can catch up on all of the local news. This week, the top stories are:

1. UPDATE: Cops Identify Victims in Fatal Parkway Crash: New York State Police are investigating a fatal crash that took place on the Meadowbrook Parkway Monday. Charges have also been filed.
2. Car Flips Over on Cameron Avenue: Cameron Avenue was closed at Jenkins Street after a car flipped over at around 11:30 p.m. Monday. One person was involved in the crash, and "they seem to be alright as of now," cops said.
3. Calhoun Teacher Receives Apple's Distinguished Educator Award: Richard Perry, a teacher at Calhoun High School, was one of just 75 in North America to be honored with the Apple Distinguished Educator Award.
4. Mepham Wrestler Wins State Title: Louis Hernandez knew that he had to keep calm after trailing going into the third period of the finals at the State Tournament in Albany on Feb. 23, and his patience paid off, as he became the first Mepham High School wrestler in 29 years to win the State Championship.
5. Birch Elementary School Founders Day, Oscars Eat Your Heart Out: Only a few days after the 85th Annual Oscars, we had our own Awards show right here in Merrick.  It was Founders Day at Birch Elementary School.
