Who's Who in Merrick: Claudia Borecky

  1. What do you do for a living?  My name is Claudia Borecky and I work for Nassau County.
  2. How are you involved with Merrick?  I am President of the North and Central Merrick Civic Association, Regional Director and founder of the Nassau County Coalition of Civic Associations,  Co-chair of its Sewage Treatment Plant Committee, board member of the Merrick Historical Society, member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1282, chair of the Bellmore/Merrick LIRR Taskforce, the Merrick Avenue Beautification Committee and Legislator Denenberg’s Disaster Response Taskforce.  As such, I fight to protect our families, our environment and the quaint suburban quality of life that drew me to Merrick 30 years ago.
  3. What's the best thing about Merrick?  The best thing about Merrick without question is its people. Merrick is a community of people that care about its neighbors. I am never more proud to call myself a Merokean than when I see my neighbors helping each other out, not only in emergencies, but in everyday life. We are a community that cares — a community with a heart!
  4. How did you end up in Merrick?  When my first child was a baby, we looked for a neighborhood to raise our family. We looked at school districts, a piece of property large enough for a pool and not too far from the city.  Friends of ours had just moved here and we were immediately attracted to the small town feel of this community and the importance the community put into the education of its children. We made our home here 30 years, raised a family with the values I share with my neighbors, which prepared them both to get into the colleges of their choice. I have absolutely no regrets.
  5. What do you do for fun?  I enjoy time with my friends and family and enjoy a number of great restaurants in our area. But I also cherish quiet nights at home with my husband and spending time at our home in the Adirondacks. I love to sit at the lake and read a book, swim and take long walks in the woods with my husband and my dog. And I love to write.
  6. Tell me about your family. Do you have any children or grandchildren?  I am married to Michael for 36 years. We have two wonderful sons, Chris (32) and Tim (26), both of whom went to Camp Avenue and then Calhoun High School. Chris went to NYU for Film and later got his Masters in Library Science. He is now married, has two wonderful step children and has a house in Rego Park. Tim went to Berkley School of Music and will receive his Masters in Education at the end of this semester. He teaches the music program at a public elementary school in the city and has an apartment in the city.
  7. Where are your favorite places in Merrick?  It’s difficult for me to name my favorite places in Merrick, but what first comes to mind is Merrick Avenue in the spring and fall. My heart skips a beat when I drive down Merrick Avenue when the pear trees are in bloom and when the sun hits their leaves in the fall. I do not have one particular place that I would say is my favorite place except to say that as soon as I get off the Meadowbrook Parkway at the end of a work day, I am home.
  8. Finish this sentence. You know you're from Merrick when... You know you’re from Merrick when you know what the “M” on the back of an SUV stands for.
