Winter Storm Targets Merrick: Latest Forecast, Cancellations, How To Prepare

National Weather Service forecasts show Merrick could see up to 15 inches of snow this weekend.

MERRICK, NY. — Merrick residents are among the millions of Long Islanders gearing up for a snowy weekend, as ever-evolving forecasts indicate that the storm could leave up to 15 inches of snow on Long Island doorsteps. In Merrick, a cold, windy Saturday will give way to a snowy Sunday and a wintry mix to round out the weekend.

Current National Weather Service forecasts say snow could begin as soon as 1 a.m. Sunday morning, getting heavy as the day continues and leaving upwards of 8 inches of snow on Merrick before nightfall. With an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow and sleet in the forecast for Sunday night, total precipitation in Levittown this weekend could reach 9 to 15 inches in total. A winter storm warning is in effect from 3 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday, with a cold weather advisory in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to noon Saturday.

The Town of Hempstead has already canceled fitness and recreation center classes on Sunday and Monday, and has closed its senior centers Monday.

In a Friday statement, Town Supervisor John Ferretti urged residents to limit unnecessary travel during the storm.

“As the storm approaches, the most important thing you can do is stay informed, limit unnecessary travel, and give our crews the space they need to do their jobs safely,” Ferretti said. “We’re taking this seriously, planning ahead, and will continue to keep residents updated every step of the way.”
