1 Dead in Tractor-Trailer Accident on I-87
The investigation is still ongoing as to why one driver struck the rear of another tractor-trailer.

NEW PALTZ, NY — An accident that occurred Wednesday on I-87 took the life of one man.
Police said the accident happened around 8:54 p.m. between Exit 18 (New Paltz) and Exit 19 (Kingston).
The investigation found that Vernon W. Bigelow,d 47, of St. Albans, VT, was operating a 2008 Freightliner tractor-trailer northbound on I-87 when, for reasons unknown, he struck the rear of a northbound 2005 Volvo tractor-trailer which was being operated by Alex Calle-Cardenas, 28, of New Milford, PA.

After striking the Volvo, Bigelow lost control of his vehicle and it continue into the center median. It struck the guide rail and caught fire.
Bigelow was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ulster County Assitant Medical Examiner.

Calle-Cardenas complained of neck and back pain, but declined being transported to a local hospital.
The Spring Lake Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the fire.
The accident is still under investigation.
