2 Men Accused Of Trying To Kill Each Other In Broad Daylight

Both men face multiple felonies including second-degree attempted murder, police said.

NEWBURGH, NY — Two Newburgh men were accused of trying to kill each other during a daylight shooting in the city of Newburgh.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Tuesday that Lavelle Stackhouse, 24, and Joshua Hendrick, 21, both of Newburgh, were charged with second-degree attempted murder, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and first-degree reckless endangerment, all felonies.

Stackhouse was also charged with second-degree assault, a felony.

Both men face 25 years in prison on the attempted murder charge.

Prosecutors said Stackhouse approached Hendrick on the street Sept. 8, pulled out a firearm and fired at Hendrick, who was struck in the torso and leg.

Hendrick pulled out a gun and returned fire at Stackhouse as Stackhouse ran down the street, police said.

Another person was shot in the shoulder during the incident, according to authorities.

Prosecutors said the entire shooting was captured on video.

Stackhouse fled the scene and was not apprehended until Tuesday with the assistance of the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Forces.

Stackhouse, who was arraigned Tuesday, remains in the Orange County Jail in lieu of bail which was set in the amount of $250,000 cash bail, $500,000 secured bond or $750,000 partially secured bond. He is next scheduled to appear in court Dec. 20.

Hendrick, who was arraigned Oct. 21, remains in the Orange County Jail in lieu of bail set in the amount of $250,000 cash bail, $500,000 secured bond or $800,000 partially secured bond. A virtual court appearance for him is scheduled for Dec. 22.

The City of Newburgh Police Department was assisted in the investigation by Orange County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, the FBI Safe Streets Task Forces, U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Forces and the Orange County District Attorney's Office.
