8-Year-Old Found In Pool Is Dead, Adult In Critical Condition

Police in Walkill said the child was discovered partially submerged in a backyard pool and a 40-year-old-man was unconscious nearby.

WALKILL, NY — An 8-year-old child died after an apparent drowning in a backyard pool over the holiday weekend, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a possible child drowning at a home on Fair Oaks Road in Wallkill just before 8 p.m. on Sunday. When they arrived, police discovered a child partially submerged in the backyard pool and an unresponsive man on the grass by the pool, officials said in a statement.

Both the child and and the 40-year-old man, later identified as Yaw Assad, were taken to Garnet Health Medical Center, where the child was pronounced dead. The man was listed in critical condition, according to police.

Walkill police said detectives are investigating the apparent drowning with the assistance of the New York State Police.
