Alzheimer’s Association plans educational and social programs in May

Events offered virtually and in-person around the Hudson Valley

The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter will host the following free events in May. Unless otherwise noted, call the Alzheimer's Association to register or for more information at 800.272.3900.

Something for Alz: Musical Moments: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 4. An interactive virtual music program with Music Therapist Jeffrey Friedberg.

Virtual Alzheimer's and Dementia for Caregivers: An Overview of the Disease & Services: 2-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 4: A free virtual program in partnership with the New York State Division of Veterans Services including the Alzheimer's Association's educational program, Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia, a presentation on care consultations and early-stage support groups and a presentation about caregiver benefits.

Effective Communication Strategies: 2-3 p.m. Thursday, May 5: A free in-person program at Newburgh Free Library, Main Library, 124 Grand St., Newburgh. Learn how communication takes place when someone has dementia. Learn to decode verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at every stage of the disease.

Something for Alz: Gentle Yoga for Everyone: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday, May 6. Gentle yoga movement led by Robin Laufer.

Legal & Financial Planning for Alzheimer's Disease: 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 11. A free in-person program at Albert Wisner Public Library, 1 McFarland Drive, Warwick. This program offers information on legal and financial issues to consider before an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and how to put plans in place for the future. Sunday Social: 12:30-3 p.m. Sunday, May 15. Join us for a fun in-person social event for people with dementia and their loved ones featuring lunch and music at The Club at Briarcliff Manor. Pre-screening and pre-registration are required to participate.

Living with Alzheimer's: For Middle-Stage Caregivers (Part 2): 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, May 16. Part two of a free three-part virtual program with strategies on how to provide safe, effective and comfortable care in the middle stage of Alzheimer's.

Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: 2 p.m. Monday, May 16: A free virtual program with information on diet, nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement. Get hands-on tools to develop a plan for healthy aging.

Managing Money: A Caregiver's Guide to Finances: 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 17 in person at Mahopac Public Library, 688 Route 6, Mahopac. If you or someone you know is facing Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or another chronic illness, it’s never too early to put financial plans in place. Join us to learn tips for managing someone else’s finances, how to prepare for future care costs and the benefits of early planning. Something for Alz: Morning Game Show: 10-11 a.m. Sunday, May 22. People with dementia and their family caregivers are invited to join us for a morning of games including Jeopardy, Hollywood Squares, Charades and more.

Understanding Alzheimer's and Dementia: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, May 22. A free in-person event at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 55 Wilbur Blvd., Poughkeepsie.
