Alzheimer's Association to offer free programs in September

Educational and social programs offered for the general public, people with dementia and their family caregivers

The Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Chapter will host the following free events in person and via Zoom in September. Unless otherwise noted, call the Alzheimer's Association to register or for more information.

Something for Alz: Creative Arts: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7. A free virtual program for people with dementia and their family caregivers with creative arts therapist Christine Randolph.

10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s *in person*: 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8 at Newburgh Free Library Town Branch, Newburgh Mall, 1401 Route 300, Newburgh in Orange County. Learn about 10 common warning signs and what to watch for in yourself and others. This free program explores typical age-related changes, common warning signs of Alzheimer’s, how to approach someone about memory concerns, early detection, the benefits of a diagnosis and the diagnostic process and Alzheimer’s Association resources.

Hudson Valley Walk to End Alzheimer's Information Session: 6-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 9. Join the Alzheimer’s Association Hudson Valley Walk Team to learn about the 2021 Walk, including safety protocols, as well as some tips for reaching (and exceeding) your goals.

Virtual Memory Cafe (for early-stage only): 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Sept. 9 and 23. Enjoy musical entertainment and interact with others who also have early-stage dementia.

Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia *in person*: 1-2 p.m. Friday, Sep. 10 at New Castle Community Center, 10 Senter St., Chappaqua in Westchester County. Join us for a free program by the Alzheimer’s Association. Learn about the impact of Alzheimer’s, the difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s, disease stages and risk factors, current research and treatments as well as Alzheimer’s Association resources. AlzWell Social Club: 1-3:30 p.m. Saturdays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25. Creative interactive fun for people with dementia and their loved ones that features movement to music, a support group with art therapists, dance and other activities.

Alzheimer’s Awareness Evening with the Hudson Valley Renegades: 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10. The Hudson Valley Renegades partner with the Alzheimer’s Association for an Alzheimer’s Awareness Evening. $22 ticket package includes reserved seating and Renegades hats. Tickets can be purchased at gadesgroups.com. Dutchess/Ulster residents should use password ALZDCUC for Dutchess/Ulster Walk, Orange/Sullivan residents should use password ALZOCSC for the Orange/Sullivan Walk and Putnam residents should use password ALZPC for the Putnam Walk.

Legal and Financial Planning *hybrid*: 6-7 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 13 and 20. This interactive two-part program in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County will be offered via Zoom and in person at Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County, 64 Ferndale Loomis Road, No. 1, Liberty, in the north room. Participants will have a chance to learn about important legal and financial issues to consider, how to put plans in place and how to access legal and financial resources. Sept. 13 will focus on legal issues and Sept. 20 on financial ones. Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research: 10-11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14. Join us for a free virtual educational program by the Alzheimer’s Association in partnership with AARP with information on diet, nutrition, exercise, cognitive activity and social engagement. Get hands-on tools to develop a plan for healthy aging.

Virtual Visit with N.Y. Therapy Dogs: 11-11:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 16. Offers an opportunity to view and interact with New York Therapy Animals virtually. Viewing and interacting with animals can be a way to relax, interact and meet new friends.

Alz Across NY: Visual Storytelling: Collecting African-American Art at the Munson Williams Museum: 2-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16. A free virtual program for people with dementia and their loved ones including a tour of an exhibit featuring African-American art.
