Ambush Armed Robbery At Shopping Mall Leads To 2 Arrests: Feds

NEWBURGH, NY — Two suspects are facing federal charges after a robbery in the parking lot of Newburgh Mall, in which the victim was run over by his own truck.

According to the Town of Newburgh Police Department, officers responded at about 6:34 p.m., on Aug. 20, to 1401 Route 300 for a report of an altercation involving a firearm. Patrol officers arrived and found an injured man in the parking lot. Officers soon located and stopped a vehicle believed to be involved a short distance from the scene.

According to police, officers determined the driver was one of the suspects and took him into custody. The investigation found that the victim had been robbed by two suspects during a pre-arranged transaction, according to the department. Police said one suspect displayed a firearm while the other brandished a knife.

Police also reported that one of the suspects stole the victim's vehicle and, during the theft, intentionally struck the victim with the vehicle before fleeing . The stolen vehicle was later recovered unoccupied, according to the department.

Because of what police described as the "nature and complexity" of the case, detectives from the Town of Newburgh Police Department responded and took over the investigation.

Over the following days, detectives identified the second suspect involved in the incident, according to the department. That suspect was located Aug. 31, at about 6:20 p.m., at the Dollar General in the Town of Fishkill, and was taken into custody.

The Town of Newburgh Police Department said both suspects are being charged federally and that the case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Investigators said the case was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. Both suspects were in the custody of the United States Marshals Service.

The department said it was assisted by the FBI Hudson Valley Safe Streets Task Force, the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, the City of Newburgh Police Department, New York State Police, the Orange County District Attorney's Office, the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York, and Town of Newburgh Emergency Medical Services.
