PLATTEKILL, NY — A busy K-9 officer has a nose for the job.

The New York State Police say that on Wednesday, around 12:11 a.m., members of the Troop F Community Stabilization Unit pulled over a 2023 Honda traveling north on I-87, in the Town of Plattekill.

Troopers stopped the vehicle and identified the driver and only occupant as 47-year-old Sherod Wiggins, of Catskill.

During the investigation, NYSP K-9 Kell was deployed and alerted troopers to the odor of narcotics, according to troopers.

During a search of the vehicle, Wiggins became non-compliant and tried to flee back into his vehicle, cops said.

While troopers attempted to take Wiggins into custody, he became combative, according to NYSP. However, troopers were soon able to safely place him under arrest.

A search of Wiggins' person revealed no contraband, but a search of the Honda led to troopers finding around 352 grams of cocaine in a clear plastic bag, according to police.

Wiggins was taken to State Police Highland, where he was processed. He was charged with felony first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (narcotic drug, 8 oz. or more); felony third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (intent to sell); misdemeanor second-degree obstructing governmental administration; misdemeanor resisting arrest; and several traffic tickets.

Wiggins was remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
