According to court documents and police, on January 2, 2025, around 9:10 a.m., a relative of Bascus was asleep in a home at the Old Forge Hill Apartments. Prosecutors say that the relative woke up when Bascus was stabbing him several times with several knives without provocation.

New Windsor police officers arriving at the scene found a 45-year-old man bleeding from stab wounds to his chest, face and hands. He was treated and taken to Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh by New Windsor EMS. Prosecutors say that the victim required surgery for his injuries.

After fleeing the home, Bascus was found by police in the backyard of a nearby home with blood on his hands, according to prosecutors. A knife and clothing believed to have been used during the attack were found in an area Bascus was believed to have thrown them.

During plea proceedings, Bascus admitted that, "with intent to cause serious physical injury to another person, he did attempt to cause such injury to such person or to a third person by means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument," prosecutors said.

DA Hoovler thanked the Town of New Windsor Police Department for their investigation which led to the arrest of Bascus, and the New York State Police for assistance in apprehending him.

"This defendant's violent admitted conduct deserves the significant sentence imposed by the court," Hoovler said. "Domestic violence has life-changing consequences for victims such as the one in this case and I commend the Town of New Windsor Police Department for their prompt and thorough response. I urge all victims of domestic violence to come forward and to know that there are resources and support available to them from my Office and agencies such as Fearless! Hudson Valley. The prosecution of violent felonies will continue to be an essential priority of my Office."
