Main Street Shovel Assault Started As Domestic Dispute, According To Police

A 43-year-old registered sex offender was charged in the domestic violence case, according to Ellenville police.

ELLENVILLE, NY — An assault with a shovel on Main Street started as domestic dispute, police in Ulster County said.

Ellenville police said a village man was arrested Wednesday evening after the reported domestic dispute at a North Main Street address turned violent and left a woman injured.

Officers responded at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday. Investigators said that Kelly Smith, 43, of Ellenville struck the victim with a shovel.

The victim was taken to Ellenville Hospital by the Ellenville Rescue Squad, where she was treated and released.

Police said Smith is also a Level 3 sex offender.

He was charged with second-degree assault. Police also charged him with fourth-degree criminal mischief, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.

Smith was arrested, processed and taken to Ulster County CAP for arraignment, according to police. He was then remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
