A warm front and low pressure system will bring the widespread rainfall and a few potential thunderstorms today into early Tuesday in eastern New York.

There is a chance for thunderstorms this afternoon in the mid-Hudson Valley, and these could become strong to severe, with damaging winds the main threat, according to the National Weather Service.

It predicts total rainfall amounts will be between half an inch to two inches across the region.

There is a marginal risk for excessive rainfall today. This could lead to isolated flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. While the weather pattern has been dry, flooding could result due to too much rainfall in a short period of time, forecasters said.

The National Weather Service predicts any possible thunderstorms will happen after 2 p.m. today.

The high temperature today will reach into the low to mid-70s. The wet weather will persist overnight tonight, when the chance of precipitation is between 90 and 100 percent, then showers will taper off on Tuesday, giving way to mostly cloudy skies, according to the National Weather Service.
