WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY — A Wappingers Falls police officer was involved in an on-duty shooting, according to officials.

During the early morning hours Saturday, officers from the Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, and the New York State Police responded to a critical incident at East Main Street and Market Street.
During that incident, law enforcement personnel discharged
their firearms. A 17-year-old boy was killed during the encounter.
"On behalf of the members of the Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department, I extend my sincere condolences to the family and friends of this young man," Police Commissioner Dave Fisher said in a statement. "Our thoughts are also with the responding officers, their families, and all those whose lives have been affected by this tragic incident."
"Pursuant to New York State law and established protocol, the incident is being investigated by the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office under the oversight of the New York State Attorney General's Office," according to Fisher. "The Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department is cooperating fully with that investigation ... We recognize that this incident has had a profound impact on our community. The Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department remains committed to serving our residents with professionalism, integrity, and transparency while respecting the investigative process."
Local officials described the events as tragic for all involved.
"My heart goes out to the family of this young man and to the members of law enforcement who encountered an absolute tragic situation in the Village of Wappingers Falls last night," Wappinger Town Supervisor Joseph Cavvacini said in a statement released on Saturday.
