HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The heat and humidity are expected to reach “dangerous” levels this week, and there will be multiple chances for thunderstorms, according to the National Weather Service.
A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for southeast New York, with an extreme heat watch for Wednesday through Friday.
Heat index values could reach up to 110, according to the National Weather Service.
“Plan for the heat! There'll be an elevated risk for heat-related illness,” the National Weather Service said.
To avoid heat-related illnesses, drink plenty of water, stay in air conditioning, and when outside, avoid direct sunshine. To find a cooling center, call 211. If you need to work outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning.
Temperatures on Tuesday will be around 90 degrees, then will hover around 100 degrees for Wednesday through Friday, with the humidity making it feel even hotter, National Weather Service forecasters said.
Thunderstorms are possible in the region on Tuesday night and Wednesday afternoon.
For the Fourth of July, it is expected to be sunny and hot again, with highs in the 90s, and another chance for showers and thunderstorms.
Gov. Kathy Hochul urged New Yorkers to prepare for the upcoming period of extreme heat.
“New Yorkers should take the proper precautions to protect themselves and their families by staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors, and monitoring your local forecast,” Hochul said. “I also encourage everyone to check in on those most vulnerable and our elderly neighbors — one phone call or visit could save a life.”
The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has extended hours at state swimming and cooling facilities and other state parks during the heat wave. In the Hudson Valley, that includes:
