WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY — Authorities have officially released the identity of the teenager killed in a police shooting in Dutchess County.

The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has opened an investigation into the death of 17-year-old Oscar Granados Colindres, who died on June 27, following an encounter with members of the New York State Police, the Dutchess County Sheriff's Office, and the Village of Wappingers Falls Police Department.

During the early morning hours of June 27, police responded to a 911 call reporting a suicidal person in Wappingers Falls. Officers arriving on the scene encountered Colindres standing on the ledge of an overpass bridge with a knife in his hand, according to investigators. Officers attempted to speak to Colindres for about 50 minutes, but then officers say the teen ran toward at least one officer while holding the knife.

Multiple officers fired their service weapons, striking Colindres., according to the initial investigation. The teenager was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Officers recovered a knife at the scene, according to the AG.

"Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission," The AG's office said, announcing the probe. "Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the decedent may be armed or unarmed. Also, the decedent may or may not be in custody or incarcerated. If OSI’s assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, OSI proceeds to conduct a full investigation of the incident."
