Flash Flooding Concerns Rise For Hudson Valley

Residents are advised to monitor weather alerts due to potential flooding, according to forecasters.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A flood watch is in effect for the Hudson Valley, with up to three inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts possible today, according to meteorologists.

The National Weather Service reports multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms could lead to “scattered to numerous instances of flash flooding.”

Flash flooding is likeliest in urban and poor drainage areas, roads and small streams, according to the National Weather Service.

Residents are urged to monitor for weather alerts, and be prepared to take action if a flash flood warning is issued. Motorists should avoid flooded roadways, meteorologists said.

“Repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected today through early Tuesday,” the National Weather Service said. “With abundant moisture in place, showers and thunderstorms will be capable of producing very heavy downpours.”

The flood watch is in effect until late Monday night for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester Counties and through 6 a.m. Tuesday for Ulster and Dutchess counties

High temperatures are expected to reach around 70 today.

Tuesday brings another chance for showers and thunderstorms, then Wednesday and Thursday are expected to bring sunshine and highs in the 80s to the region, according to meteorologists.

Here are the forecast details for the Mid-Hudson Valley area via the National Weather Service:

Today: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 70. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers. Low around 58. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Showers likely, with thunderstorms also possible after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Light north wind.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. Calm wind.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 62.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 89.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 67.

Friday: A chance of showers before 8 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Today: Periods of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 69. East wind around 13 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tonight: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 61. Northeast wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday: Showers likely before 2 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., then a slight chance of thunderstorms after 5 p.m. Cloudy, with a high near 70. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of showers between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. North wind around 6 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 65.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 86.

Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers before 2 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69.

Friday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 87.
