Inmate Who Tried To Shank Female Guard Gets 12 More Years Behind Bars

BEEKMAN, NY — A violent attack of prison guards means spending more time in the custody of prison guards for an inmate in Dutchess County.

Dutchess County District Attorney Anthony Parisi said Edward Gibson, 43, was sentenced on Tuesday to 12 years in state prison followed by five years of post-release supervision after pleading guilty in April to felony attempted assault.

The violent incident occurred on July 21, 2025, at Green Haven Correctional Facility in the Town of Beekman.

Gibson, armed with a metal shank, ran toward a female correctional officer and swung the weapon at her upper body. The officer avoided being struck but fell to the ground during the attack, suffering a knee injury.

Gibson then continued his assault by approaching another correctional officer. Gibson admitted in court that he attempted to cause serious physical injury to that officer by striking him in the back with the metal shank.

"The brave men and women who work inside our correctional facilities deserve to know that when they are violently attacked for simply doing their jobs, those responsible will be prosecuted and held accountable," District Attorney Anthony Parisi said. "This sentence reflects the seriousness of this deliberate and violent attack on correction officers who were working to maintain the safety and security of Green Haven Correctional Facility. Through my Office's Jail and Prison Violence Prevention Initiative, we have made the prosecution of violence committed within our correctional facilities a priority, working closely with our law enforcement and correctional partners to ensure those who commit these crimes face meaningful consequences that protect correction staff, inmates, and the public alike."
