GOSHEN, NY — It ain't easy roughing it at a big summer festival, but sometimes it's worth it for the bragging rights. Lucky for us, the festival that might make your friends the most envious is right here in the Hudson Valley.
I thought my days of packing up the car and heading out to a big music festival were behind me, but when my daughter looked up from the latest issue of "Lego Life Magazine" to ask if we could go the the Lego Festival this year, I began to suspect I might find myself right back in the scene.
When she held up the cover story, and excitedly explained that Pikachu and the Pokémon were headlining at the Play Zone, I knew I would soon be donning a wrist band and studying the lineup once again. Like The Red Hot Chili Peppers headlining Lollapalooza back in '92, this was a big deal.
Of course, the Lego Festival at Legoland New York Resort has a decidedly less "grungey" feel than a a pre-Y2K music festival.
This festival is built especially for kids in mind, and play takes always takes center stage. Like its brethren, the festival features entertainment across several stages and themed events. The price of admission lets festivalgoers visit the Music, Creativity, and Chill Out play zones.
In this year's Lego Festival, Lego Pokémon is headlining the Play Zone, letting festivalgoers be among the first to try out the soon to be released Lego Pokémon "Smart" playsets. It has been an age-old dream of fictional anime characters (and 8-year-old girls) to train like a true Pokémon Trainer. That dream can be a reality in the 15-minute interactive Lego Pokémon: Trainer Center experience.
Kids and grownups alike get a chance to build Lego Poké Balls, then test their skills as a trainer with Lego Pokémon that respond and even battle each other in the arena.
There is also a 'backstage" chance to strike a pose with a bigger-than-life Pikachu built of Lego bricks.
At the very first Bonnaroo, Widespread Panic announced that they were about to play a song that had never been played in public before. I remember that the crowd was riotous, but I can't for the life of me remember what that song was. My daughter, however, will never forget being among the first kids in the world to defeat her dad's Lego Eevee in a Lego Pokémon Showdown with the Lego Squirtle she trained herself.
Rock stars are inarguably cool, but at Legoland, it's the Master Builders who are the real rock stars. In the Creative Zone, kids (and Lego-obsessed parents) get a chance to get hands-on with the best, and most creative Lego builders in the land. Master Model Builder shows include "Anything Animal" and "Let's Create a Creature," with expert and insider tips from those Master Model Builders.
The most important part of any music festival is the chance to dance like the party is never going to end, and the Lego Festival is no exception. The ultimate band in the Lego universe takes center stage for several sets a day. The "Rockstars" and "Popstars" go head-to-head in a playful, but high-stakes Battle of the Bands show.
At these performances, everybody has a backstage pass. Snapping a selfie with "Melody Raye" and "Lyric" is just the start of the VIP fun. Concertgoers can stick around after the show to meet the band.
The secret to keeping your energy up at any summer festival is finding a little time to just chill. The Grateful Dead had "Space," and the organizers of Lego Festival 2026 have you covered. The "Chill Out Zone" is a secret garden "where nature takes the lead." The peaceful, plant-filled escape promises surprises waiting around every toadstool. Visitors can unwind and create their own Lego flower and add it to a growing garden.
Ambitious festivalgoers who visit each of the festival stages can get their card punched, and will receive a special Lego prize on their way out of the festival.
"Big Cypress," Phish's historic millennium New Year's festival had overpriced tethered hot air balloon rides, but at Lego Festival, all the rides in the entire Legoland Park are free with admission. Just imagine how much better Coachella would be if there were a waterpark on the festival grounds. And the Dragon Coaster rivals anything that took place on the second stage at the Sasquatch Music Festival at the Gorge.
Unlike the original Woodstock, the Lego Festival has plenty of parking, and the convenience of restrooms with modern plumbing. Best of all, you can sleep in your own bed after the fun. And since the festival runs seven days a week through Aug. 16, you don't have to worry about making the boss angry with an inconvenient time-off request.
