West Point Announces James Bartholomees III As 62nd Superintendent

WEST POINT, NY — The U.S. Military Academy announced Maj. Gen. James Bartholomees III as its 62nd superintendent Monday, with Bartholomees taking over the post previously held by Lt. Gen. Steven W. Gilland in a change of command ceremony.

According to the academy, Bartholomees is a 1995 West Point graduate, most recently serving as the Commanding General of the 25th infantry division and U.S. Army Hawaii. In his time at West Point, officials said Bartholomees took part in infantry officer basic and advanced courses, and graduated from the command and general staff college as well as the U.S. Army War College.

"For nearly 225 years, the United States Military Academy has been synonymous with leadership, a wellspring of professional excellence producing generations of leaders of character who have led the Army and Nation in peace and war, unified by the ideals that serve as the bedrock of this institution: Duty, Honor, Country," Bartholomees said. "I am honored by the opportunity to lead this extraordinary institution and its outstanding team of professionals."

A married father of four, Bartholomees has also served as chief of staff in the U.S. Army Pacific, executive officer to the director of the Army Staff, commander of the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, the Second Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the Second Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division in Schofield Barracks in Hawaii.

Finally, Bartholomees has served as a peacekeeper in Haiti in 1996 and Bosnia-Herzegovina in 2000-2001. He also deployed to Iraq in 2003 and Afghanistan between 2004 and 2016.

For Gilland, Monday was an important day in its own right: The outgoing superintendent retired after 36 years in the U.S. Army, having served as superintendent since June of 2022.

"The U.S. Military Academy is far more than an institution. It is a place of purpose, character, and selfless service. It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as one of its stewards," Gilland said.
