E-Bike, Moped Police Chases End With Arrests In 2 Separate Incidents: Newburgh Police

NEWBURGH, NY — Running from the police is never a good idea, but bringing an e-bike to prowler race is almost certain to end with an "L".

On Monday, City of Newburgh police officers spotted an e-Bike traveling against traffic on Broadway. When officers attempted to stop the rider, he fled, leading them on a brief pursuit through city streets, according to cops The rider eventually abandoned the e-Bike on South Miller Street and tried to hide nearby, police said. Officers located their suspect on South Miller Street and took him into custody.

The rider was identified as Kashon Williams, a 33-year-old City of Newburgh resident, according to police. During the investigation, officers recovered substances believed to be fentanyl, heroin, and crack cocaine, along with drug paraphernalia, police said.

Williams was charged with possession of a controlled substance in the second degree, possession of a controlled substance in the third degree (intent to sell), criminal use of drug paraphernalia, and obstructing governmental administration.

The E-Bike was impounded.

In a separate incident the next day a City of Newburgh Police officer spotted a gas powered moped traveling through red traffic signals at Broadway and West Street and again at Broadway and Washington Terrace. When the officer tried to stop the moped, the rider fled, traveling through more red lights, onto sidewalks, and between parked vehicles, according to police.

Officers then ended the pursuit due to safety concerns, but officers later spotted the same rider near Lake Street and South William Street, police said. The suspect abandoned the moped and fled on foot before officers caught up with him and took him into custody. That suspect was identified by police as Juan Clas-Curbelo, a 27-year-old City of Newburgh resident.

Officers report recovering suspected illegal narcotics from a compartment on the moped.

Clas-Curbelo was charged with obstructing governmental administration, criminal possession of a controlled substance, and a violation for riding on a sidewalk. He was also issued several traffic tickets, and the moped was impounded.
