Arrest Made In Crash That Led To Pony Death

Police said the man was driving while ability impaired when he struck the pony-drawn carriage.

UNION VALE, NY — A Union Vale man was arrested for a crash in May that injured a woman driving a pony-drawn carriage. State police said John F. Kosinski, 74, of Union Vale, was charged with second-degree vehicular assault, a felony, and driving while ability impaired combined alcohol and drugs, a misdemeanor.

Police said that, on May 11, they investigated a serious motor vehicle crash on Chestnut Ridge Road in the Town of Union Vale.

It was found that Kosinski, operating a 2016 Subaru Forester, was driving north on Chestnut Ridge Road and struck a pony-drawn carriage carrying Maryjean Calvi, 61, of Millbrook.

She sustained serious injuries, but is expected to recover.

The pony had to be euthanized.

After further investigation, and the receipt of laboratory results, probable cause was developed to arrest Kosinski.

He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Town of Union Vale Court Aug. 7.
