Bail Scam Accusation In Hudson Valley
The victim said he thought he was helping a relative.
WALLKILL, NY — State police made an arrest in what they say was a bail scam. A Town of Wallkill resident said he was contacted by someone who said they were a defense attorney and that their nephew had been arrested in another state and needed bail money.
The caller told the victim to send $500 in cash via FedEx to a New Jersey address, police said.
He did, thinking he was helping a relative.

Police opened an investigation and, working with the Prospect Park (New Jersey) Police Department, state police identified a suspect.
On Sept. 19, Middletown state police arrested Juan Gil-Delao, 22, of Clinton, New Jersey.

He was charged with third-degree grand larceny, a felony.
Gil-Delao was arraigned in the Town of Wallkill Court and released after posting $1,000 bail.
He is also facing charges in New Jersey, state police said.
