Best College Town Food In NY Found In Hudson Valley: Report

College is the time for hitting the books, having late-night conversations on weighty matters and charting a course for one’s future. But college is also a time for good food, hopefully as cheaply as possible. The website Tasting Table took a look at iconic college towns and narrowed down the list to the best one in each of the 50 states.

Not surprisingly, the mid- and lower-Hudson Valley — home to the illustrious Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park — showed up on the list. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

New Paltz in Ulster County is where the State University of New York at New Paltz is located.

Tasting Table singled out Main Street Bistro in New Paltz as having the best college town food in New York.

“There’s never not a line around the corner here,” Tasting Table’s Abby Reisner said. “The atmosphere is always welcoming; there’s rock music on full blast; and the food is excellent, comforting and inexpensive.”

Reisner points out that for $1.95 hungry college students can get the breakfast special: two eggs any style, home fries and whole-wheat toast.

According to the Main Street Bistro website, that price is for eating-in only. For a take-out order, the costs goes up to $2.95, which still sounds like a pretty good deal.

Of course, one can add a side of bacon or ham or turkey sausage, for a little extra. Tofu can even be substituted for the eggs, again for a little more.

In neighboring Connecticut, Alpha Delta Pizza in New Haven, which is where Yale University is sited, is the best place in the state for a student to get — not pizza — but the Wenzel, a chicken, hot sauce, cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo combo.

Tasting Table recommends it is best consumed after midnight.
