Brooklyn Man Faces Felony Charge After Taking 'Magic Mushrooms,' Getting Lost In Hudson Valley Woods: NYSP

TUXEDO, NY — What started as a spiritual journey, became legal jeopardy when police got involved.

The New York State Police say that on Tuesday, troopers arrested 30-year-old Jashiya B. Smith, of Brooklyn, on the charge of felony second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (hallucinogen).

On Monday, around 8:02 p.m., troopers responded to Harriman State Park, near Stahahe Lake, after receiving a report about a group of lost hikers.

Around 11 p.m., Smith, who was one of the lost hikers, became separated from the others after consuming psilocybin mushrooms, NYSP said.

After an argument amongst the group, Smith reportedly became overwhelmed and ran through the woods. When he reached Arden Valley Road, near Island Pond Road in the Town of Tuxedo, he was able to call for help.

State police say that Smith was found to be in possession of around 45 grams of psilocybin mushrooms.

He was arrested and taken to State Police Monroe for processing without incident.

Smith was arraigned on Tuesday, in the Town of Tuxedo Court, and released on his recognizance. He is due back in court on July 8.

State police say the investigation is ongoing.
