Buffalo On The Loose In Upstate New York

We mean the animal, and not the city, which is also in upstate New York.

If you are traveling in upstate New York, keep a look out for a herd of buffalo on the loose. State police at Richfield Springs and a local farmer are asking for the public's help in locating about 75 buffalo that escaped from a farm in the Town of Sharon, Schoharie County, which is west of Albany.

Brian, the owner of the buffalo, has asked anyone who spots the beasts to contact him so he can attempt to bring them back to his farm.

The state police, however, warn the public not to approach the buffalo since they are wild animals and can be unpredictable.

Troopers were sent July 25 to Honey Hill Road in Roseboom, Ostego County, after receiving a report that several buffalo were eating second cutting hay still growing in the field — resulting in no forage that could be harvested.

The buffalo were also eating first cutting round bales of hay.

Troopers learned that one of the buffalo broke a gate allowing the animals to escape from the farm.

Specifically, there are at least 30 adult buffalo, including three bulls and 45 calves, with about half of the calves being bulls.

Troopers said they worked with a Department of Environmental Conservation officer and the owner of the buffalo last week to come up with a plan to corral and funnel the animals.

However, it is believed they have already moved from the area.

There have been reports of buffalo on Mill Pond Road in the Town of Schoharie to Pleasant Brook in the Town of Roseboom.

If you see any of the buffalo, call Brian at 518-588-1402 or State Police Richfield Springs at 315-858-1122.
