Mount Saint Mary College will present “Climbing Mountains and Dodging Demons: The Dangerous Faith of Frassati and Longo,” the next talk in the series “Lectures in Applied Theology in Honor of Sr. Peggy Murphy,” on Tuesday, April 21 at 4 p.m.&nbsp;
The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place on campus in the Dominican Center room 218. Mount Saint Mary College is located at 330 Powell Ave., Newburgh, N.Y.
This lecture series was created in honor of the talented Sr. Peggy Murphy, a retired professor at the college. Sr. Murphy made learning the principles of Catholic Theology a joy for her students for more than 20 years.
The presentation will focus on two newly canonized Dominican tertiaries, Bartolo Longo and Pier Giorgio Frassati, whose lives demonstrate that holiness is accessible to ordinary people.&nbsp;
In his talk, Robert Miller, associate professor of Religious Studies at the Mount, will argue that being a “saint” isn’t just an old-fashioned idea, but a modern way of living. He believes that anyone can lead a deeply meaningful life by finding purpose in their everyday routines and sticking to their values.&nbsp;
He’ll share the stories of two men who prove that ordinary people can do extraordinary things: Pier Giorgio Frassati, who found his calling through college life and friendships, and Bartolo Longo, who went from being a Satanist to a devoted community leader. Their lives show today’s students that no matter your background, you can turn your education and your passions into a life with real impact.
Miller is a Senior Fellow of the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology and a board member for the Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary - USA. Before coming to the Mount, he taught both graduate and undergraduate classes in scripture and theology at Caldwell College and Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology at Seton Hall University. Miller’s research spans a wide area of theology and biblical studies, including biblical theology and typology, John’s Gospel, and Mariology. He is active in his parish coordinating the RCIA process and offering other adult enrichment opportunities, and also serves as the faculty advisor to the Mount’s golf team.

In this lecture, Yale University’s Reuben Post Halleck Professor of History, Paul Bushkovitch, challenges the assumption among historians of early modern Russia that, prior to Peter the Great, Russian culture was almost entirely religious. The 2010 publication of a sixteenth-century Russian translation of Guido delle Colonne’s Historia destructionis Troiae (1287), included as part of the monumental sixteenth-century Illustrated Chronicle Compilation, makes clear that this generalization needs revision and demonstrates that the court culture of the Grand Dukes/Tsars included much more than devotional texts and images. This publication brings forward the question of what mid-sixteenth-century Russian culture was really like, further illuminating the fascinating story of the relationship between Russian and Western European cultures.

Mount Saint Mary College will celebrate student creativity and storytelling from the next generation of media makers at the annual 2026 CMA Show on Friday, April 24, at 5 p.m. in Aquinas Hall, Room 216. 
The Mount community and the general public are invited to come be inspired and support emerging talent while getting a firsthand look at what is next in the worlds of media and art at the free show.
The CMA Show highlights the diverse talents of students within the Communication, Media, and Arts program. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore a variety of student-produced works, including films and cinematic storytelling; graphic design and visual branding; photography; social media campaigns; and radio and podcasts.
In keeping with tradition, the event will also feature comedy from the college’s TV show, Last Friday Knight.
The Mount’s Communication, Media, and Art (CMA) programs encompass the study of digital media production and graphic design. CMA also offers minors in each of these disciplines, as well as in art, journalism, and film studies. CMA programs prepare students for both traditional and emerging professions.

Hudson River Maritime Museum

Do you ever wonder if there were actual pirates on the Hudson River? Come and learn about a wild chapter in Hudson River history when mercenary sloops prowled the waterway, raiding mansions and plundering merchant ships. Who were these river outlaws stirring up chaos…and how did local communities and the law fight back? The evening will begin with a brief lecture on the real and sometimes legendary criminal activity along the Hudson in the 1860s and 1870s, followed by an immersive performance starring the era’s most infamous characters in the flesh, including the mysterious young woman rumored to have led a notorious Lower Manhattan gang. Watch as she is put on trial for her alleged crimes. Is she guilty? How does her story end? Who decides her fate? This special event weaves scholarship and storytelling, created and presented by HRMM’s Education Department in collaboration with Siren Theatre Company. Crime on the Hudson: Gilded Age Pirates and River Thieves - Performance Lecture

“Bite the Bullet,” Washington’s Headquarters’ Program on Revolutionary era medicine, is designed to acquaint audiences with the state of medical knowledge and some of the practices of medicine in the time of George Washington. Physicians were frequently confounded by the causes of illness, treated symptoms, and relied heavily on the healing powers of nature. Many remedies stocked by apothecaries were herbal in nature, and the best doctors of the time still healed with herbs. In 1775, the US had 3,500 doctors, but only 300 had medical degrees. The profession of physician / surgeon was open only to men, but the system relied heavily on women who could be and were midwives. The lecture quotes from the diary of traveling midwife, Martha Ballard, of northern Massachusetts who kept a record of her work as a healer and a midwife, which provides an unparalleled window into practical medicine in the quarter century straddling 1800.

Speaker Bio:&nbsp;Matthew Weigman has been a Hudson Valley resident going back to 1962 and has had an interest in American history since the age of 16. His 32-year-career in communications at the auction house Sotheby’s concluded with nine years as Worldwide Director of Sales Communications, based in London. As a historical interpreter at Washington’s Headquarters Newburgh for the past four years he has enjoyed illuminating visitors and audiences about significant achievements of the “indispensable man” of the American Revolution during its final 16 months, as well as lecturing about the era of the Revolution itself. To satisfy an interest in horticulture Matthew volunteers as a Master Gardener with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Putnam County, writes regularly for the Garden Club of America magazine Bulletin and lectures in historical horticulture.

The Vassar <a href="https://www.vassar.edu/drama" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Drama Department</a> hosts a staged reading and reception honoring the recipient of the <a href="https://www.vassar.edu/drama/courses-requirements/playwriting-competition" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Marilyn Swartz Seven ’69 Annual Playwriting Competition</a>.
The award is presented to a junior or senior in any discipline who submits the best full-length play. Established in 1999, this year marks the 26th anniversary of the competition. Past recipients have come from a range of majors, including English, Math, Science, and Drama. The winning playwright receives a $1,000 award, a certificate, a staged reading, and a catered reception hosted by the Drama Department.
Recipient, play title, and additional details will be announced by the Drama Department on March 1, 2026.

KINGSTON, N.Y. –&nbsp;The&nbsp;Hudson River Maritime Museum has announced Walkie Talkie with Us, a new and&nbsp;novel series of educational historic strolls and more vigorous walks in the Kingston Rondout area.&nbsp;Led by an HRMM Educator and avid walker, each 1 -3 mile walk will explore a different neighborhood or street in the Kingston waterfront area (Rondout), uncovering stories behind historic homes and buildings, local landmarks, and the people who shaped Rondout’s past.
Walkie Talkie with Us&nbsp;is different from other walking tours that provide a walk/stop/talk format which are generally anaerobic. Walkie Talkie with Us tours maintain a gentle yet continuous pace which are more aerobic, with the Educator turning, walking and talking, to share stories and local historical musings with the group. Two routes will be offered on a rotating monthly basis, including a less strenuous “stroll” and a more rigorous “hike,” which will include the steep incline of Wurts Street.&nbsp;Routes will be chosen for walkability and seating opportunities, ensuring comfort and inclusion for all participants.
