This lecture explores the dramatic and human factors that transformed the Chinese landscape from wooden buildings supported by ceramic-tile roofs to twisted metal and megatall. The political and emotional story begins around 1840.

It involves teachers, students, architects, patrons, and governments from Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, China, Japan, and the United States, all against the backdrop of six wars and revolution, and it involves some of the most influential architects of the twenty-first century.
