Central Hudson Continues Ulster County Power Restoration

The power company warns that melting ice could let tree limbs to snap back and cause additional outages.

MID-HUDSON VALLEY, NY — A little more than 1,500 Central Hudson customers remain without electricity Tuesday, in the aftermath of a historic ice storm.

The power company said restoration efforts will be completed Tuesday in areas that were most heavily impacted by the snow and ice storm.

As of 11 a.m., about 1,500 in Ulster County are waiting for the lights to be turned on.

Dry ice and bottled water distribution started at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hurley Reformed Church, 15 Main St. in Hurley.

Central Hudson said it expects to have power restored to 95 percent of customers by 4 p.m. Tuesday and the remaining by 10 p.m. Tuesday.

The power company warns that, with temperatures above freezing, ice will melt and fall and tree limbs that have been weighed down will snap back, possibly causing additional outages.

Ryan Hawthorne, vice president of electric engineering and operations, said once restoration is complete, the company will shift its focus to addressing any lingering damage and reducing the potential for any additional outages.

"This has been an historic storm for Ulster County and we are extremely grateful for the tremendous efforts given by all of our municipal, county and New York State partners," he said.

Hawthorne said, since the start of the storm Thursday evening, repairs at more than 1,000 individual locations were completed. There were 93 broken poles and more than 2,400 cases of downed lines.
