Coronavirus: 10 In Isolation In Dutchess County

Health officials say the people are being monitored to see if they develop symptoms.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY — There are 10 people in Dutchess County in isolation after possibly being exposed to the new coronavirus. One person was cleared after going into self-isolation.

Cathi Tegtmeier, Dutchess County's assistant commissioner for community health, said Thursday that none of people have symptoms and there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19, as the virus is now called, as of Wednesday, the Poughkeepsie Journal reported.

In Westchester County, 26 people are quarantined and being monitored to see if any symptoms develop.

Symptoms include fever, cough and shortness of breath, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

States with confirmed cases of the new coronavirus are Arizona, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. There have been no confirmed cases in the state of New York to date.

The U.S. Department of State has issued a "do not travel" advisory for China.

Medical officials said the public can stay safe by doing what is usually advised to protect from getting the flu: washing hands, staying away from sick people and covering one's mouth when coughing and sneezing.

Getting a flu shot would also help rule out influenza as a cause of illness, health experts said.
