Driver Ejected In Deadly I-87 Wrong-Way Overnight Crash Is ID'd, 6 Others Injured
A New City man and three teenagers were among those hurt in the four-car crash, according to New York State Police.
SAUGERTIES, NY — A car driving the wrong direction on a Hudson Valley highway led to a deadly four-car crash, according to police.
On Sunday, at 9:11 p.m., troopers assigned to the Albany Thruway barracks responded to a report of a wrong-way driver on Interstate 87 north, between Exits 19 and 20, in the town of Saugerties.
Investigators say a 2025 Toyota was traveling south in the northbound lanes when it struck a 2022 Honda, a 2020 BMW, and a 2017 Ford F-150, all of which were traveling north.

The driver and only occupant of the Toyota was identified as 42-year-old Joseph Mensah-Otoo, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
Six others were injured in the crash, including a 37-year-old man from New City; a 59-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, both from Cohoes; two 19-year-old men, both from Dalton, Massachusetts; and a 19-year-old man from Hinsdale, Massachusetts.

All of the injured were taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston with non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation remains ongoing, according to New York State Police.
