Expectant Father Killed When Gender-Reveal Device Explodes

The man was working on the device with his brother when it exploded.

LIBERTY, NY — An expectant father was killed building a gender-reveal device in Sullivan County.

The New York State Police said Christopher Pekny, 28, of Liberty, was working on the device with his brother Michael Pekny, 27, also of Liberty, when it exploded shortly before noon Sunday at a home on the Lt. JG Brender Highway.

Police confirmed Christopher Pekny was the father, Syracuse.com reported.

Michael Pekny was injured in the incident and was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center in Middletown.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing by the state police and its Bomb Disposal Unit.
