'Expert' Skier Dies in Accident at Hunter Mountain: Police

He was described as an expert skier and was on an expert-level trail.

HUNTER, NY — An Orange County man died Wednesday after he lost control while skiing at Hunter Mountain Ski Center in Greene County.

State police said Edwin Wood, 58, of Warwick, was an expert skier.

He was on the Annapurna trail, a double black diamond — or expert — trail on Hunter’s west side.

After he lost control, he slid about 200 feet before leaving the trail and striking several trees.

Wood was extricated by the ski patrol and was treated by Greene County Paramedics and Hunter area ambulance personnel before being pronounced dead.

State Police said they are treating the matter as an accidental fall and don’t suspect foul play.

An autopsy is scheduled for a later date.
