Fatal ATV Crash In Sullivan County

Police said the man lost control of the ATV, left the roadway and struck a tree.

LIBERTY, NY — An Orange County man was killed when his ATV went off the road and hit a tree.

The New York State Police said, around 8:50 p.m. Sunday, troopers were sent to Mongaup Road in the town of Liberty in Sullivan County for an ATV crash.

An investigation found the Richard J. Dempwolf, 45, of Maybrook, Orange County, was operating a 2005 Honda ATV.

He was traveling west on Mongaup Road when he lost control and left the roadway and struck a tree.

A couple driving by the area saw the damaged ATV and Dempwolf, who was injured, and called 911.

Hurleyville Fire Department was the first on scene and told the troopers that Dempwolf appeared to have died on impact.

He was pronounced dead, police said.
