Prosecutors said, after the woman's death was discovered, the man continued to sell the deadly drug.

MONTICELLO, NY — A Sullivan County man found out how long he will be spending behind bars for the fentanyl death of a woman who was the mother of one of his children.

Damian Williams, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said Thursday that Steven Jones, 37, of Monticello, was sentenced to 200 months — or 16-2/3 years — for his distribution of heroin and fentanyl that resulted in the death of Jamie Elliott, 26, of Cochecton.

The sentencing followed Jones’s guilty plea on Nov. 29, 2021.

“Steven Jones sold the fentanyl-laced heroin that killed Jamie Elliot, a 26-year-old mother,” Williams said. “Even after Jones’s drugs killed Jamie Elliott, he continued to peddle dangerous opioids.”

Prosecutors said, on June 1, 2018, Jones sold fentanyl-laced heroin stamped “Dorney Park” to Elliott, the mother of one of his children.

Elliott was found dead inside her bedroom the following morning.

An autopsy conducted following her death revealed she had died from a lethal dose of fentanyl. New York State Police investigators recovered additional bags of “Dorney Park” fentanyl-laced heroin in Elliott’s clothing.

Facebook Messenger messages reflected that Elliott had purchased narcotics from Jones the evening before her death. The day her death was discovered, Jones deactivated his Facebook account.

But, prosecutors said, he did not stop selling dangerous drugs. Shortly before his Sept. 2, 2018, arrest he obtained 500 more glassine envelopes of heroin for sale.

In addtion to prison, Jones was sentenced to three years of supervised release.
