Gap Complex Fire Deliberately Set: ATF

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has completed its on-site investigation.

FISHKILL, NY — Police officials have determined that the fire at the Gap Distribution Center was intentionally set.

A brief statement by the State Police issued Tuesday said, “The New York State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) have complete the on-site investigation of the commercial structure fire that occurred on August 29, 2016, at the Gap Northeast Distribution Center in Fishkill, New York. The location was released to Gap Inc. on September 5, 2016.

“The ATF National Response Team has concluded that the fire was incendiary in nature. This means that the fire was intentionally set. NYSP and ATF are continuing the investigation.”

About 600 people worked in the distribution center's Building 100, which was destroyed by the fire. The entire distribution center employs about 1,300 people.

The fire began about 11 p.m. and more than 20 fire departments from Dutchess, Putnam and Orange counties assisted in the fire-fighting efforts.

The ATF has federal jurisdiction over fires involving interstate commerce.
