Grandson Charged With Attempted Murder After Violently Assaulting 96-Year-Old Grandmother: Police

RHINEBECK, NY — A brutal attack on an elderly woman has left the victim in the hospital, and her grandson in handcuffs, according to police.

On Saturday, at 10:21 a.m., New York State Police in Rhinebeck were called to a home on James Street in Rhinebeck, to help EMS. A family member had arrived to the residence for a weekly visit and found the 96-year-old victim lying in her bed with significant bruising to her head and face, as well as apparent blood loss.

The victim was taken to Northern Dutchess Hospital.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in Rhinebeck said that Max F. Klahr, 22, of Tivoli, had gone to his grandmother’s home the previous night, with the intention of spending the night. During the visit, an argument started between Klahr and his grandmother. Investigators Klahr became irate and assaulted his grandmother before leaving and returning to his home.

Klahr was later arrested and charged with attempted murder (with depraved Indifference), assault (causing serious physical injury through grave risk of death), felony criminal mischief (damaging Another Person’s Property in an Amount Greater Than $250), criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation (blocking the nose or mouth and misdemeanor criminal mischief.

Klahr was arraigned in the Town of Hyde Park Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Justice and Transition Center. He is scheduled to reappear in court on Aug. 12.

New York State Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
